Can we save our big birds from the threat of development?
The number one threat to the endangered Southern Cassowary is the loss of its rainforest habitat. However, in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest, 207 freehold properties remain at risk of develoment. The simple solution, purchase all of the remaining undeveloped freehold properties and protect them forever.
Development in the Daintree Rainforest is destroying Cassowary's habitat.
Daintree land buyback is the best way to save the Cassowary and we’ve proven that it works. Eight properties have been protected in less than two years though buying the properties one at a time. Now we are doubling our efforts and with your help will purchase two special properties in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest by the 2nd of May 2021.
Please, will you help purchase and protect the Daintree Rainforest. Every $2.50 you donate will help save one square metre of the Daintree. If you donate $25 you will help save ten square meters of essential Cassowary habitat! A donation of $50 will help save 20 square meters and $100 will help save forty square meters of the World Heritage value Daintree Rainforest.
In the Daintree Lowland Rainforest, settlement brings increased traffic and increases the risks to Cassowaries.

Daintree Rainforest land sales have rapidly escalated due to Covid-19 and we urgently need to increase our buyback of land to directly compete with those that would develop the world's oldest rainforest.
We are witnessing an increase in clearing for housing development so we must act now.
We have identified Lot 85 Cape Tribulation Road at Diwan and Lot 167 Buchanan Creek Road at Cow Bay as the next properties to be purchased and protected. We urgently need your support for the buyback of these rainforest blocks.
Please, will you help purchase and protect the Daintree Rainforest. Every $2.50 you donate will help save one square metre of the Daintree. We simply cannot allow the Cassowary to take another step towards extinction.
The Southern Cassowary is listed as endangered under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Commonwealth) and ‘threatened’ by the Nature Conservation Act 1999 (Queensland). Protection and conservation management of the habitat of these species is important for their survival in the wild. The rainforest on Lot 85 Cape Tribulation Road has been identified as essential habitat for the Southern Cassowary.
Lot 85 Cape Tribulation Road provides essential habitat for Cassowaries
Lot 167 Cape Tribulation Road is in Cow Bay, an area where Cassowaries are sighted almost daily. On Lot 167 we found a single specimen of Noah's Walnut (Endiandra microneura) on Lot 167 Buchanan Creek Road. Its large yellow oblong-shaped fruits are dispersed by the Southern Cassowary.
Noah's Walnut is only found naturally within the Daintree rainforests predominately north of the Daintree River and south of Cape Tribulation. This tree is also listed as a Threatened species on the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992.

In the three weeks since launching this appeal, we have raised $88,025. If you are one of the many people who have donated, thank you!
We now need to raise $136,780 by the 2nd of May.

All funds raised will be spent on Daintreee land purchase and protection. We have been successful in purchasing land in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest for conservation eight times in the past twenty months. We feel confident in reaching the fundraising target for the next two properties.
If it did occur that we didn’t reach the target of $224,805 to buy two properties then we would just purchase one.
We want to be successful, now and into the future, so we carefully choose the properties we want to purchase for conservation. We have a plan to reach the fundraising target needed to buy each property. We purchase them one at a time, we space out the acquisitions and we give consideration to the total cost and the success of past fundraising. Of course, nothing is guaranteed and if we are unable to reach the target for a specified property purchase the donated monies will be used for a future land purchase in the Daintree Rainforest, or if necessary for other conservation projects in the Daintree Rainforest, for example, planting trees. The Rainforest 4 Foundation is registered with the Australian Charites and Non-for-profits Commission and we are required to only spend the donations we receive on the cause as specified in our constitution. What happens if we donate and it’s not sufficient to purchase the land by the due date? What is the donated funds to be used for then? How are donations reported – ie. Financials for the charity. Is there a report on what has been purchased and the long term obligations for land that’s owned by the org?
