Daintree’s Lot 93 protected from development!

Today we have announced one of our most significant achievements – the protection of Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. Thank you to everyone who donated to support the purchase of this special rainforest property.

Protecting Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road is a significant achievement for the conservation of the Daintree Rainforest.

We confirmed the successful fundraising for the purchase in September and this has enabled the purchase to proceed. Thank you to all of the generous donors!

The natural values of this 8.09-hectare property mark it out as something special with 258 species of native plantsfive of which are listed as Threatened species, and a further four species of endemic plants that have their distribution largely restricted to the Daintree lowlands. A summary of our vegetation survey can be found here.

The vegetation at this location has been mapped as Essential Habitat for the Endangered Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) and there have been many sighted on the property in recent months. This property has a 375m frontage with the beautiful Hutchinsons Creek which contains the Critical Endangered Daintree Rainbow Fish which was only identified as a new species in 2018. You can see the aquatic ecology survey here.

The rainforest and Hutchinson Creek are exceptionally beautiful and we have added photographs of the property on Facebook here.

This is the 25th Daintree Rainforest property we have purchased for conservation and a map and all of the properties can be seen here

Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road was created through a subdivision of land in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest in the 1980s. While it has had several owners it had not been developed for housing, unlike other properties nearby. Now we will begin the process of adding the property to the Daintree National Park (CYPAL) which is co-managed by the Jabalabina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and the Queensland National Parks Service.

Thank you to the thousands of people who made a decision to help save the Daintree.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to the purchase and protection of this special property in the heart of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. Raising the funds required extra effort. Starting in January, it took us eight months to raise $405,500. In that time, we also purchased 4 other less expensive properties. You can see them all here.

Thank you to everyone who donated to support the purchase of this special rainforest property.

Lot 93 and Hutchinson Creek

Purchase and protection.

Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road was last sold at auction in November 2021. The new owner then provided us with an option to purchase the property from them with a legally binding agreement. Now that we have been successful with our fundraising we have exercised the option to purchase the property. A deposit has been paid and details of the settlement will be determined and announced soon.

In addition to purchasing the property, the funds raised will also support the restoration works. An old donga (a temporary, usually transportable, dwelling), a derelict Toyota van, a rusty water tank, car batteries, hundreds of bottles and cans, and other assorted rubbish have already been removed. The exotic plants, the Guinea Grass, Asian Brambles, and Lantana have also been removed and we have planted 1,000 rainforest trees. Please read more about the restoration work underway here.

Lot 398 Maple Road is the next property.

We are continuing with the buyback of land in the Daintree so that it can be managed for conservation and the next property is Lot 398 Maple Road at Cow Bay.

A large Hopes Cycad over 1,000 years old and an intact canopy of old-growth rainforest trees make Lot 398 Maple Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest an important acquisition for conservation. The impressive canopy of 60-metre-tall trees is intact, there is no evidence of past clearing or logging, and there are many old-growth trees with hollows that provide habitat for Birds, Snakes, Gliders, Possums, Bats, and other tree-dwelling animals.

This freehold property deserves the same level of protection as the adjacent Daintree National Park and World Heritage Area so with your help we will purchase Lot 398 Maple Road and ensure it will be managed for conservation. Lot 398 Maple Road at Cow Bay is 1.412-hectares in size and is completely covered by tropical rainforest. We have exchanged a contract of sale and now we need your help.

The cost of purchase and protection of Lot 398 Maple Road is just $2 per sqm.

Please, donate now and help purchase Lot 398 Maple Road in the Daintree Rainforest. Every $2.00 you donate will help save one square metre of the Daintree. If you donate $20 you will help purchase ten square metres of essential Cassowary habitat! A donation of $50 will help purchase twenty-five square metres and $100 will help purchase fifty square metres of the World Heritage value Daintree Rainforest.
