Daintree Rainforest Tour 2022

To celebrate the purchase and protection of more than 20 properties in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest we’re hosting donors and friends on a unique tour of the world’s oldest living rainforest.

26 – 28 April 2022

Hosted by Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, HalfCut, and the Rainforest 4 Foundation

Over three days you’ll join Kuku Yalanji Elders and Eco-Cultural Guides alongside Rainforest 4 Foundation and HalfCut team members for rainforest walks, hands-on rainforest restoration and visits to some of the special rainforest properties acquired with your support. You’ll also have the opportunity to witness a special ceremony for the handover of another 10 properties back into ownership and management of the Traditional Owners, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji.

Walk alongside Kuku Yalanji Elders and Eco-Cultural Guides to gain a glimpse of their World Heritage rainforest through their eyes. Learn from their unbroken knowledge of the Daintree Rainforest that stretches back in time. They will share with you how they continue to care for and protect this truly special place and their deep spiritual knowledge of its plants, animals and dreaming. Their partnership with Rainforest 4 Foundation and HalfCut is one of the many important ways they are protecting the Daintree Rainforest for all future generations to come.

Yalanjiwarra (Eastern Kuku Yalanji people) are part of the oldest continuing culture on the planet and they proudly care for the oldest continually existing rainforest in the world. In September 2021 the Daintree, Ngalba-bulal (formerly Cedar Bay) Kalkajaka (formerly Black Mountain) and Hope Islands national parks were returned to their ownership. Now they are embarking on a journey to be at the forefront of tourism experiences on their Bubu (Country).

Walking tours taking place over these three days, in collaboration with Rainforest 4 Foundation ecologist and botanist Kristopher Kupsch will be the first of their kind. The tours are a pilot of what is to come in showcasing Eastern Kuku Yalanji Country and Culture to the world.

Rainforest Restoration: Daintree Lowland Rainforest
Tuesday 26 April, 9.00 am – 11.00 am

Join Jabalbina Rangers and the teams from Rainforest 4 Foundation and HalfCut to plant 500 trees on Lot 11 Buchanan Creek Road at Cow Bay.

A Welcome to Country will be followed by the hands-on activity of planting 500 trees. All of the holes will be prepared in advance making this an activity for all ages.

We raised the funds to purchase Lot 11 Buchanan Creek Road in December 2021 and settlement takes place in April, after which time the property will be managed for conservation by the Jabalbina Rangers.

Lot 11 Buchanan Creek Road was part of the original subdivision of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest that occurred in 1982. When the Daintree National Park was gazetted, it was not included. A past owner cleared an area of rainforest with the dream of building a house. Fortunately, that dream did not come to fruition. This tree planting will re-establish the rainforest in this clearing.

Participation in this activity is free.
