The Daintree Lowland Rainforest is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage sites exist side-by-side. It is home to the oldest tropical rainforest in the World and boasts the greatest diversity of plants and animals found in Australia. There are more tree species in one hectare of the Daintree than in all of the UK.

Right now, the local government – Douglas Shire Council – has tabled plans to build a bridge over the Daintree River. At the moment, the only way to cross the river and enter the Daintree Lowland Rainforest is by vehicular barge.

The Daintree Rainbowfish was only discovered in 2018 yet it has already been listed as Critically Endangered. They are only known to exist in the Cooper and Hutchinson creek systems of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest and the number one action needed to ensure their survival is habitat protection. 

A bridge over the Daintree River will cause irreversible damage to World Heritage values and will fuel further development along the Daintree coast. Thousands of people have added their voice to calls to urgently stop this bridge.

On my most recent visit to the Daintree Rainforest, I went to see a property I was planning to purchase for conservation only to find someone else has beaten us to it. The outcome is devastating. 

Recovery from the November 2019 bushfires in Northern NSW continued yesterday with the planting of another 100 trees on a fire affected site and the removal of exotic weeds to support the natural regeneration of the sub-tropical rainforest.
