Kelvin Davies on Lot 107 in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest
Thank you so much to everyone who made a donation towards this great outcome.
Lot 107 Buchanan Creek Road, Cow Bay is 1 ha in size and is completely covered by tropical rainforest. Buying and protecting this property will be a fantastic outcome for conservation as it connects to the Daintree National Park in multiple directions, is in pristine condition and is vital habitat for the Endangered Southern Cassowary. It will also help to wind back the impacts of the disastrous 1980’s rural residential subdivision.
SOLD: Kelvin Davies on Buchanan Creek Road in the Daintree
Settlement on the purchase of Lot 107 Buchanan Creek Road will occur on Wednesday the 31st of July. Then the property will be transferred to the Queensland Government for inclusion in the Daintree National Park. The Rainforest 4 Foundation and the Jabalbina Aboriginal Corporation are working together to achieve this outcome. Rainforest 4 is fundraising to meet the costs associated with purchase and protection. Jabalbina will acquire the property from the current owner. Then they will be the owners of the property until it is transferred to the Queensland Government. This process has already started however it may take a few more months to complete. If we retained ownership of the property, we’d have to pay local government rates of $1,000 per year forever. We’d prefer your donation to go towards buying more land.
Lot 107 Provides vital habitat for endangered Cassowaries
Thanks again to everyone who donated to help purchase and protect Lot 107 Buchanan Creek Road and wind back the impact of development in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest.
Today it’s estimated that 170 properties in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest are at risk of development. Population growth, changes to the economy, the pressure to provide mains electricity, a bridge rather than the ferry and improved telecommunications could see the risk of development in the Daintree increase. For that reason, we'll look forward to working with you to purchase and protect another Daintree Rainforest property soon.
With gratitude,
Kelvin Davies
