We’ve got Cassowaries on Daintree's Lot 93

In the Daintree Rainforest, we are always on the lookout for Cassowaries and in recent weeks we’ve been very lucky indeed.

Cassowary chick on Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road

We’d seen the signs of Cassowaries using Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road with lots of Cassowary poop on the property. Then, last week we saw them! An adult male Cassowary and one chick of about 9 months old.

It’s a thrill to see Cassowaries in their natural habitat and it also confirms the importance of our work is to protect the Daintree Lowland Rainforest from the threat of development.

Last week we also saw an adult male Cassowary and three chicks crossing Cape Tribulation Road. What a great experience!

Cassowaries are endangered and the number one threat to their survival is the loss of habitat. That's why protecting at-risk freehold properties like Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road is essential.

We do this through a simple and direct method that works – we buy the land and protect it forever.

Please, donate now and help purchase and protect Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. Each $5.00 you donate will purchase and protect one sqm of the Lowland Daintree Rainforest.

Cassowaries crossing Cape Tribulation Road

Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road is an 8.09-hectare freehold property that can be developed for housing. All that’s needed is for the owner to obtain development consent from Douglas Shire Council and clearing of the rainforest can commence.

Fortunately, we’ve been able to negotiate an option with the current owner to purchase this property for conservation. But we must raise $404,500 and this month we must pay the agreed deposit of $70,000. So far, we’ve raised $55,754. So today, I urgently need your help to raise $14,246 to reach the target for the deposit.

Cassowary habitat destroyed for housing in February

Cassowaries are reliant on tropical rainforests. They can’t live in other habitats. That’s why the purchase of at-risk Daintree Rainforest properties is vitally important. Clearing of the Daintree Rainforest to build houses is destroying and degrading habitat and it’s happening now.

Purchasing Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road for conservation will protect essential habitat for the endangered Southern Cassowary. Many food plants for the Cassowary are present in the form of Laurels, Figs, Palms, and Quandongs.

Cassowary on Buchanan Creek Road at Cow Bay

We’ve also had some wonderful sightings of Cassowaries in Cow Bay where we have purchased 8 properties in the last 12 months.

We’ve added pictures of our recent Cassowary sightings here

Unfortunately, many people believe the Daintree Rainforest is protected as a national park. The reality is a subdivision occurred in the 1980s and ongoing development has followed. We have identified 207 undeveloped freehold properties in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. These properties are not protected in the Daintree National Park. These are the properties we are targeting for purchase and protection.

Only 4,200 Cassowaries remain in Australia’s wet tropical rainforest - that includes both adults and chicks. The Daintree Lowland Rainforest is a stronghold for these huge birds and this is why we must purchase and protect at-risk properties like Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road.

Cassowary at Olivers Creek

Cassowaries are at risk of being struck by cars and attacked by dogs, however, the number one threat is the loss of habitat. You can do something about this though helping to purchase at-risk properties in the Daintree Rainforest.

Please, donate now and help purchase and protect Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. Each $5.00 you donate will purchase and protect one sqm of the Lowland Daintree Rainforest. Every property we purchase for conservation in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest will help reverse the impacts of the disastrous 1980s rural residential subdivision.
