New Project: Saving Daintree’s Lot 93 from development

When Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road was advertised for sale, I knew it would be snapped up fast as the property has a 375 metre of frontage with the exceptionally beautiful Hutchinson Creek.

By acting quickly (and with some luck) we’ve secured an option to buy this 8.09-hectare freehold at-risk property in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. Now we must raise the funds to ensure it's protected forever.

The rainforest meets beautiful Hutchinsons Creek.

The high biodiversity and threatened species on Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road at Diwan have identified this property as our highest priority for acquisition. Our vegetation survey identified an amazing 258 species of native plants, including 5 threatened species and 4 more that are endemic to the Daintree Rainforest

This beautiful rainforest is deserving of protection. However, it was not included in the Daintree National Park declared in 1988 and it remains a freehold property zoned for development. Governments have failed to protect this beautiful rainforest and now it’s up to you.

Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest is 8.09-hectares in size. We are raising $404,500 for its purchase and protection. At $5 per sqm, this represents exceptional value for your investment in nature conservation.

Our aquatic ecology survey of Hutchinson Creek identified the presence of the Daintree Rainbowfish. The Daintree Rainbowfish was only described as a new species in 2018 and has been listed as Critically Endangered. An important action needed to ensure their survival is the protection of riparian vegetation.

Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road is a freehold property that can be developed for housing subject to approval by the Douglas Shire Council. The purchase of this property will support the ongoing conservation of the Daintree Rainbowfish. You can read about the 21 species of fishes here

We’ve taken many photographs of the property which you can see here.

The vegetation on Lot 93 is classified as Regional Ecosystem 7.3.10a: Mesophyll vine forest. Regional Ecosystem 7.3.10a is listed as “Of Concern” under the Vegetation Management Act 1999. The Queensland government indicates a pre-clearing amount of 60,000 ha existed with 14,000 ha hectares remaining in 2019.

The Queensland government specifically states that this vegetation type has “Special Values” being:

Small areas on the very wet lowlands, especially between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation, harbour plant species which are extremely restricted and uncommon. Many areas of this ecosystem are considered refugial in nature and are local centres of endemism. Many representatives of primitive families of flowering plants are present, including the monotypic family Idiospermaceae. The ecosystem is the habitat for many threatened plant species.

In January 2021 we set a goal of purchasing 12 properties in 12 months and with your help we did it. That brings the total area of land that we've saved to over 500,000 sqm

That's a great achievement, however, we cant rest there. We have identified 207 undeveloped freehold properties. That's why in 2022 I'm again committing to the goal of 12 properties purchased and protected in 12 months!

Other at-risk Daintree properties are on the market however we can only purchase them one at a time, so please, help get us started in 2022 with a donation for the purchase and protection of Lot 93 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. Each $5.00 you donate will purchase and protect one sqm of the Lowland Daintree Rainforest.

Thanks for everything you do to help Save the Daintree Rainforest.
